The Mara is the headline and it earns it, but timing is everything, and the plains are at their emptiest and greenest in the months either side of the crossings. Off the plains there is the coast, old towns with centuries of trade in them, and the highlands. We build Kenya as a whole country, not a single park.
Most Kenya trips pair the Mara or a private conservancy with a second, quieter region, and often finish on the coast. The conservancies matter: they allow the off-road and on-foot access the national reserve does not, and they suit travellers who want the wildlife without the vehicles at a sighting.
When to goThe month matters more than the map.
For the crossings, July to October, with no promises about a given morning. For newborns and green plains, the months either side of the long rains. The coast is best from around June to October and again December to March. We would steer you off the long rains in April and May.
